The World Health Organization (WHO) is taking swift action by sending over one million polio vaccines to Gaza, aiming to protect thousands of children from potential infection. This proactive measure comes as the virus was detected in sewage samples, raising alarms about a possible outbreak.

WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus emphasized the urgency of this intervention, noting that while no polio cases have been recorded yet, it is crucial to act immediately. Children under five, particularly infants under two, are at the highest risk due to the disruption of regular vaccination campaigns caused by ongoing conflict.

Poliomyelitis is a highly infectious virus that spreads mainly through the fecal-oral route. It can invade the nervous system and cause paralysis. Thanks to global vaccination efforts, polio cases have declined by 99% since 1988. However, the virus remains a threat, particularly in areas with compromised sanitation and health infrastructure.

In addition to polio, Gaza is facing a surge in other health issues like Hepatitis A, dysentery, and gastroenteritis, as sanitary conditions continue to deteriorate. Sewage spills near camps for displaced people are exacerbating the situation, making the WHO’s intervention even more critical.

The global effort to eradicate polio must continue with unwavering commitment. The WHO’s initiative to send over one million vaccines to Gaza is a vital step in protecting vulnerable children and preventing a potential outbreak. This highlights the importance of proactive health measures and the need for continuous support to regions in crisis.
