In the wake of Israel’s recent airstrike that killed Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah, Lebanon faces a critical challenge. The country is already struggling with political divisions and an economic crisis. Now, Lebanese leaders are urging their people to come together to maintain peace and stability.

The Army’s Plea for Unity

On Sunday, Lebanon’s army warned citizens not to take part in actions that could disturb public order. This came after Nasrallah’s death in a massive Israeli airstrike on Friday. The army stated, “The Israeli enemy is working to implement its destructive plans and sow division among the Lebanese.”

Lebanon has a history of sectarian tensions and civil war, and the current situation is delicate. The army’s message is clear: now is not the time for violence. Instead, they call for national unity.

Political Calls for Calm

Prime Minister Najib Mikati echoed the army’s message, asking the Lebanese to “come together” during this difficult time. He stressed the need to preserve civil peace and urged people to set aside political differences. This call for unity was also backed by the United Nations special coordinator for Lebanon, Jeanine Hennis-Plasschaert. She highlighted the importance of focusing on what unites the Lebanese people rather than what divides them.

Political Parties Respond

Even political parties traditionally opposed to Hezbollah, such as the Lebanese Forces, have stayed silent following Nasrallah’s death. The group’s leader, Samir Geagea, advised supporters to remain calm. Former Prime Minister Saad Hariri also urged the Lebanese to rise above their differences, noting that this event has pushed Lebanon into a new phase of violence.

The Bigger Picture

Hezbollah has been a polarizing force in Lebanon for many years. It has significant military power, often greater than the Lebanese army itself. The group’s decision to support Hamas in its conflict with Israel last year drew criticism from some political figures in Lebanon. However, with Nasrallah’s killing, even Hezbollah’s critics are calling for calm and unity.

Israel’s Shifting Focus

While the ongoing war in Gaza remains a key focus for Israel, its recent military actions have shifted towards Lebanon. Heavy bombing in southern Lebanon has already killed hundreds of people and displaced tens of thousands. The situation remains tense, with fears that further escalation could push Lebanon into deeper conflict.
