The ongoing conflict between Israel and Hezbollah in Lebanon has forced several nations to put emergency evacuation plans in place for their citizens. As the situation escalates, countries are taking action to safeguard their nationals from the region.
Key Evacuation Strategies
Most countries have adopted sea evacuation as the primary mode of transportation due to its ability to move large groups of people efficiently. However, security concerns will ultimately dictate the course of action. Cyprus, a nearby hub in the Middle East, is once again stepping up, just as it did during the 2006 Hezbollah-Israel war, where it facilitated the safe passage of around 60,000 evacuees.
Evacuation Plans by Country
Australia
Australia has urged its citizens in Lebanon to leave while the Beirut airport remains open. If necessary, authorities plan to evacuate by sea.
Canada
Canada’s evacuation plans align with those of Australia, focusing on sea transport. According to reports, a commercial vessel will evacuate about 1,000 citizens daily.
United Kingdom
The UK has issued a call for immediate evacuation of its nationals. In addition, it has stationed around 700 troops in Cyprus to support evacuation operations.
United States
The U.S. has deployed troops to Cyprus to prepare for possible evacuations. These forces are stationed to support Americans in the region, ensuring their safe passage.
Portugal
Portugal has also coordinated with its EU partners, advising citizens to avoid travel to Lebanon. The government has evacuation plans in place to assist Portuguese nationals.
Operations by Sea
Sea evacuation has become the primary focus of most countries due to its ability to transport large groups. A source familiar with the operations revealed that it takes around 10 hours by sea to reach Cyprus, compared to just 40 minutes by air. However, air travel might become too risky depending on the security situation.
