Entitlement, the idea that we are owed something without earning it, lies at the heart of economic and social disparities worldwide. This concept manifests in many forms, from inherited titles and political positions to parental control and cultural norms. In this Golden Lesson #17, we explore how entitlement often breeds inequality, sows resentment, and ultimately harms society.
Entitlement and Its Many Faces
Entitlement can take on various forms. Here are a few notable examples:
- Inherited Titles and Wealth: Whether monarchy or dictatorship, inherited authority bypasses merit. For instance, in some societies, royalty or hereditary rulers are seen as “entitled” to power. Yet, their privilege often stems from lineage rather than competence.
- Unjust Political Power: In cases where power is inherited or handed down without democratic process, leadership lacks accountability. Such entitlements create a culture where authority is seen as a right rather than a responsibility.
- Parental Overreach and Control: In many cultures, parents assume they are entitled to dictate their children’s lives, treating them as possessions. This entitlement is a detriment to individual freedom and development.
While entitlement can occasionally serve a purpose, such as through well-managed trust funds, it is generally a double-edged sword. A healthier mindset focuses on earning success and repaying kindness. This pay-it-forward approach fosters mutual respect rather than resentment.
Breaking Free from Entitlement Mindset
A balanced approach to life removes the weight of entitlement, encouraging individuals to earn and contribute rather than merely expect:
- Parental Entitlement: Parents may feel entitled to control their children, yet true support comes from nurturing independence.
- Children’s Sense of Entitlement: Some children grow up believing they’re owed support from their parents indefinitely. In reality, the gift of life and opportunities for growth are privileges, not rights. Gratitude and reciprocity should replace entitlement.
- Leaders and Public Figures: Elected leaders often expect special treatment and perks without fulfilling their responsibilities. When this becomes a norm, as it has in many nations, corruption and societal decline follow.
Entitlement’s impact goes beyond individual actions; it seeps into entire communities, perpetuating a culture of self-interest. Look around, and you’ll notice the pervasive influence of entitlement in daily interactions, from minor disagreements to systemic injustices.

Adopting a mindset where “no one owes me anything” empowers individuals to take control of their lives without relying on unearned privileges. It encourages mutual respect and genuine cooperation rather than dependency and resentment.
