The upcoming Quad Summit on September 21, 2024, will focus heavily on the growing challenges posed by China in the Indo-Pacific region. According to US National Security Council Coordinator John Kirby, the summit will address multiple security and trade concerns related to China, marking it a top priority for the Quad leaders.
China’s Role in the Indo-Pacific Region
During a press briefing, Kirby emphasized the importance of discussing China’s increasing influence. “It would be irresponsible for the Quad leaders not to talk about the challenges posed by China,” he said. Topics like military actions, trade tensions, and security in the Taiwan Strait are expected to dominate discussions. With China’s aggressive stance in the region, leaders from India, Australia, Japan, and the United States aim to align strategies and boost cooperation.
Strategic Agenda at the Quad Summit
The Quad Leaders Summit will bring together Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida, and US President Joe Biden. This summit holds particular significance, as it will be the first time President Biden will host foreign leaders in his hometown, Wilmington, Delaware.
The leaders plan to discuss expanding cooperation across various critical areas, including:
- Maritime security
- Climate and clean energy
- Cybersecurity
- Infrastructure development
- Emerging technologies
Kirby noted that the Quad will emerge from this summit “more strategically aligned and more relevant than ever before.”
Individual Meetings and Bilateral Talks
In addition to the larger plenary session, Biden will hold one-on-one meetings with each Quad leader. There will also be discussions on strengthening bilateral relations, addressing issues like economic collaboration and security. PM Modi is also expected to discuss human rights, a topic that Biden consistently raises in all high-level conversations.
The Road Ahead for Quad and the Indo-Pacific
The summit is expected to produce key deliverables, showcasing the Quad’s commitment to providing tangible benefits to the Indo-Pacific region. These initiatives will support the region’s development goals and enhance security, ensuring that Quad remains a durable and thriving partnership.
PM Modi’s US Visit and the Summit of the Future
Following the Quad Summit, PM Modi will attend the ‘Summit of the Future’ at the United Nations General Assembly in New York on September 23. The summit will focus on “Multilateral Solutions for a Better Tomorrow,” underscoring global cooperation. Modi will also meet with world leaders and the Indian community during his visit.
