On Sunday, Gaza’s civil defense agency reported a devastating Israeli airstrike that targeted two schools in Gaza City, resulting in the deaths of at least 30 people. This tragic incident brings the total number of schools struck in Gaza since July 6 to eleven, with around 150 casualties. The majority of the victims in this latest attack were women and children, many of whom had sought refuge in the schools after being displaced from their homes amidst the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas.

Mahmud Bassal, a spokesperson for Gaza’s civil defense, highlighted the heartbreaking loss of life at the Hassan Salameh and Al-Nasr schools, stating that dozens more were wounded in the attack. The Israeli military confirmed the strike, asserting that the schools were being used by Hamas’ Al-Furqan Battalion as hiding places and command centers for their operatives.

This incident is not isolated. On the preceding Saturday, another Israeli airstrike on a school compound in Gaza City resulted in 17 fatalities. The Israeli military has frequently accused Hamas of utilizing civilian facilities as bases for their operations, an accusation that Hamas consistently denies.

The conflict, which escalated on October 7 when Hamas operatives attacked Israel, has led to the death of 1,197 people in Israel, primarily civilians, according to official figures. Additionally, 251 individuals were seized, with 111 still held hostage in Gaza, including 39 whom the military reports are deceased.
